UPDATE: I've created an Etsy Vintage Directory, with housewares & more clothing options. Many sellers below are not in the directory, but I still recommend checking them out.
A few weeks ago, Bethany of Road Trip Journal suggested I check out the vintage fashion on Etsy. I've meant to do that for some time; when I started covering vintage, Etsy was about to shut down their vintage category. Things have changed a lot since then, however, and with eBay hiking its rates up yet again, Etsy has become a popular haven for frustrated vintage sellers.
In this case, what's good for sellers is also good for buyers. Etsy stores have reasonable prices (i.e. no insanity-inducing auctions), and buyers have the advantage of seller ratings & the site's easy-to-navigate format. Below, some recommended vintage clothing sellers (the official Etsy Vintage Directory is now here):
Burgundy maxi dress, $52.00; green high-waist tweed skirt, $22.00; lace ruffle cami, sold; green silk shirt, sold.
1. Ma Petite Amy: A well-edited and extremely well-presented collection (that styling!). Owner Amy said on her blog that she's considering moving from Etsy to eBay, so we'll see what happens (via A Cup of Jo).

2. Pretty Little World: A large collection of bright, pretty pieces, and the prices are good. She also has a nice fashion blog.

3. Dewberry Vintage Fashion: Another cute store, with particularly good shoes.
Orange spring coat, $25.00; 1980s denim Guess skirt, $18.00; 1970s red suede skirt, $16.00.
4. OurLadyoftheUnderpas: Aimed at younger buyers, this store features bold pieces for super-low prices, modeled by a diverse set of body types. They also have covetable items in larger sizes (like the coat and red skirt above).

5. Road Trip Journal: The catalyst for this post happens to have an awesome Etsy store. I particularly liked her write-ups--she details each item's flaws and even goes into the history of certain pieces.

6. Enigma Vintage (CLOSED): Excellent descriptions, good pieces, and dreamy photography. The seller really won me over, though, when I visited her blog & saw that she loves the Tightwad Gazette too.

7. Ramona West Vintage Boutique: Clean styling and a boho-chic vibe.

8. Oh, Leoluca! (via A Cup of Jo): Brightly colored European vintage from artist Teresa Hu (who's originally from Atlanta). The amazing photographs are by Mariel Lohninger.

After reviewing hundreds of stores, we've created an edited list of great on-line vintage shops. Vintage here refers to both vintage and secondhand pieces, and we mainly looked at women's clothing (most stores have accessories as well, but they're not the focus).
We chose stores that featured a wide range of attractive items,
acceptable mark-ups, pleasant websites, and good reputations. We try to
update the list every few weeks, and perform full updates every few
months, so the list stays relevant.
The directory's ordered alphabetically (below) and by price range. Happy shopping!

Unless you sell vintage on eBay (or just read the vintage clothing message boards for kicks), you probably missed yesterday's to-do. Basically, someone posted a link to our On-line Vintage Clothing Directory on the eBay message boards, resulting in a spike in traffic, some great new vintage links, lots of drama, and many miffed vintage sellers.
First, two sellers who were on the list have been removed. Apparently both engaged in shill bidding and misrepresentation of their product, as well as other questionable practices. If either of those sellers wants to email me their side of the story, I'd really appreciate it.
Second, I've realized that there's no way that my list can be truly comprehensive. I've looked at hundreds of stores, but even then, there are many hundreds more that I've never heard of. So I'm changing the list's intro to reflect that. I've also moved the Maybes list off-line, although I'll continue to sort through those names, and others.
Third, I will not be reading seller message boards in the future, either on eBay or elsewhere, except to investigate accusations of fraud. If you'd like to contact me, please leave a comment or email me at shesabetty AT gmail DOT com.
Fourth, I sincerely appreciate all the feedback I've received. I already feel better about my list, and still see many ways to improve it. I've also learned about many, many new stores that I like very much, and can't wait to introduce to my readers.
The point of the list was to help buyers find great vintage stores. It was not to exclude deserving stores unfairly, or reward flash over substance. Marketing is important, however, as the list demonstrates.

After reviewing hundreds of stores, I made an edited list of on-line vintage shops. By vintage, I mean both vintage and secondhand/thrift pieces, with a focus on women's clothing (I may do a housewares version one day--we'll see!).
I chose stores with interesting stock, acceptable mark-ups, (usually) pleasant websites, and good reputations. I try to update the list every few months, so it stays relevant. However, it's not an end-all, be-all list: great new sellers pop up every day, and there's no way I can list them all. Conversely, placement on the list doesn't guarantee anything, so shop carefully.

ETSY ($-$$$$) Spurred by rising fees, more and more vintage sellers have migrated from self-hosted sites and eBay to Etsy. What's good for sellers is also good for buyers: Etsy stores combine easy to use, reliable interfaces with low prices (plus, no insanity-inducing auctions). Check out the Etsy Vintage Directory for an edited list of sellers. CHEAP & TRENDY Slightly pricier than the thrift-store items (often due to auctions), but still easy on your pocketbook.
UNAVAILABLE These collections were down for maintenance. We've heard good things about them, though, so we'll review them ASAP.

FASHIONISTA FINDS Higher prices than Cheap & Trendy stores, but still with affordable finds across the board.
Great vintage stores with audiences to match. Auctioned items go high, and fixed priced items are snapped up as soon as they go on sale.
Dresses and coats tend to go for $150+, while accessories and separates remain affordable.
POSH & LOVELY Too expensive for most of us, but some truly stunning selections. Prices typically start at $500 (although some only start around $250).
FOR COLLECTORS, COSTUMERS, & HISTORIANS These stores focus on collector's items rather than wearables. Prices frequently range between $650-$2000+. Extremely fun to look through.
