Design & D.I.Y. Finds: 08/13/09

Sorry to disappear! It's hectic here: my granddad got remarried, my aunt Karen came to visit with her husband and new baby (Lexi, the cutest baby ever), and I've started a novel. Then there's paying work, cleaning, visits to Japanese grocery stores, and my ever expanding reading list.

All that to say: I won't be posting often from now on. But I will keep posting, and will try to make every post worth your time. From the bottom of my heart: Thank you for reading.

• thelongthread made simple, lovely journals from cereal boxes (via Craft).
• Design*Sponge contributor Kate came up with this clever travel candle, packed in a recycled Altoid tin.
• Catherine Weis dressed up an old wood floor with painted patterns.
• Cucumbersome, who made the t-shirt necklace, has easy instructions for a chic leather chain necklace.
• Canon has many free papercraft projects, including this sun model. Check out their full selection; I especially love all the papercraft animals (via Craft).
• Etsy seller Miniature Rhino made elegant constellation embroideries (via Black Eiffel).
• Mark Bittman offers 101 easy salad recipes at the New York Times.
• Finally, I love the idea of using a bed frame as a garden trestle. Picture via Designer's Block UK, along with lots of other garden inspiration.

Design & D.I.Y. Finds: 07/09/09

• A lovely wall of silhouettes, via Vic at lost.net.au.
• EmilyStyle has easy instructions for that most intimidating of vegetables, the artichoke.
• Krisatomic embroidered old diary entries onto a sweater, varying the fonts & thread colors. Check out her site for the full photo set.
• Beautiful photos of Iekeliene Stange for/by (?) Patrizio di Renzo. Photos are from a Russian LiveJournal, hence the hazy details.
• Black raindrop wall decals, also via Vic at lost.net.au.
• Finally, Design*Sponge posted photos of Gemma Ahern's striking apartment. I love the contrast of the dark grey walls and pink accents, but what really turned my head was the bookshelf wallpaper, above. No credit is given, but it looks like Deborah Bowness' handiwork.

• Kindred has 10 free computer wallpapers designed by artists like Jessica Gonacha (above) and Blanca Gomez (via How About Orange).
• Craft found a how-to video by bento genius Anna the Red (who I previously blogged about on PopKissKiss). I love how she dyed the egg.
• Finally, Design*Sponge took a sneak peek at Scott Engler's home (both right-hand photos). It's got retro-style appliances, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and vintage science charts--in other words, it's perfect.

D.I.Y. & Design Finds: 06/18/09

Some design & D.I.Y. finds:

• dear ada posted some of Elly Yap's cacti photographs.
• Martha Stewart has an easy flower hair comb D.I.Y. project (via EmilyStyle).
• I like these clear, stackable file boxes from the Container Store, $17 each.
• Voluspa's 3-wick Japonica candles have a burn time of 80 hours & only cost $18 (via EmilyStyle). I'm getting my dad one for Father's Day (what I can say? The man loves his candles).
• Frilliest, silliest umbrella ever (in a good way), via Oh Happy Day.
• Cucumbersome made a great-looking D.I.Y. version of those trendy t-shirt necklaces (via Craft).

• Makoto Hirahara designed this brilliant lamp/fake window (via Apartment Therapy).
• Holly posted a doily chic roundup--the vase and bowl are two particular favorite finds (via decor8).

• Marimekko does polka dots (although I like the Banana Republic ones too--don't understand the hate) (via The Perfect Closet).
• I'm usually not excited about wall decals, but these city skyline ones are so cool (via Designer's Block UK).
• These strapped patent boots by Ash have just enough attitude (via Coquette).
• Finally, check out Thea Tolsma's rubber necklaces (via SeamSters).

Design Finds: 10/30/07

It's late Tuesday, I finally have photo editing software again, so here's some Design Finds:

• This bunny dish drainer is adorable, but give me a dishwasher any day (via swissmiss).
• An amazing cliff monastery (via Your Daily Awesome).
• Truly inspired product presentation from fabric store Volksfaden (via decor8).
• I only wish these Yarborough bangles were more affordable (the small ones go for $132.00!; via dear ada). Here's an Etsy version for $20, and another for $30.
• Finally, in case you haven't seen the much blogged Helena Horstedt collection, check it out (via The Shiny Squirrel, who just started a cool eponymous boutique).

Design Finds: 10/02/07

More Design Finds:

• Myoung Ho Lee transforms trees into paintings, simply by adding a white backdrop (via swissmiss).
• UK artist Paula Rego's work draws on her family's love of storytelling. Above is an illustration from her Pig Prince series (via Endicott Studio).
• Pu Tai created this "Sunrise Lampshade" with a thermochromic layer. Turning on the lamp heats the thermochromic layer, slowly changing the lampshade's color until the London skyline appears (via ThisNext Blog).
• Naomi Thellier de Poncheville designed this "Hand-le", a nice pun that also reminds me of the Hand of Fatima (via Designer's Block UK).
• Everything about this image (dress, shoes, hair, dog) is perfect. Dress by Chelsey McLaren (via Trust Your Style & Style.com).
• Elise Fouin designed this suspended "Lucinda" lamp, which look like a cross between an alien cocoon and a croissant (via Design*Sponge).
